The Essentials of Hemodiafiltration: The Value of Convection

Description

“One of the main driving forces of hemodiafiltration relies on the higher total dialytic dose delivered that includes total ultrafiltration volume, namely the convective dose, that increase and extend molecular weight spectrum of uremic compounds removed with hemodiafiltration. In this presentation, the main factors that condition performances of hemodiafiltration that include blood flow, dialyzer design and surface area, substitution and ultrafiltration flow, dialysate flow, anticoagulation and treatment time will be revisited. In addition, technical options and features of HDF machines facilitating achievement of target and their impact on water and dialysis fluid saving will be discussed. Finally, the impact on selected and clinically relevant solute clearances (urea, phosphate and B2M), solute kinetic and circulating levels control will be analyzed.

By the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand what differs between hemodiafiltration and high flux hemodialysis, why it is important to fine tune hemodiafiltration prescription and what are the targets to achieve to provide full benefits to patients.”
